Meet FAQ

Where are the meets?

Look in the post about each meet for links to maps. You can find a map with all the pools at JSL here.

I don’t have a way to get myself/my children to away meets on time.  Is there transportation?

For families who do not have transportation to away meets, the City has limited transportation available.  The sign-up sheet for the van will be posted every Monday before AWAY meets. All children 8 & under must have a parent/guardian [18 & over] accompany them on the van for the duration of the trip [going and coming]. Any child ages 9 – 17 must have a signed Transportation form filled out and turned in to Head Coach Andrea Ross. Transportation forms can be picked up during scheduled practice times.

My child needs to miss a meet.  What do I do?

We ask that families let us know by NOON each FRIDAY if one or more of your children will NOT be swimming in the upcoming meet.  We have created an on-line form for this.

If you know your summer plans, you can fill in the dates you’ll be away ahead of time.   The coaches will be consulting this to make their swim rosters for each meet.  Once that roster is submitted to the JSL, it cannot be changed.  If your swimmer isn’t at the meet, we may lose the opportunity to gain points in a particular event.

How do I sign up for volunteer jobs?

We also ask that families use the on-line signup genius to let us know what volunteer job you can do for the meets.  Again, the link is in the footer of each email, or you can click here: job sign up

All families are expected to provide one person to work at least half of every meet.   Everyone should have committed to a job for the summer when you signed up for the team.  We ask that you sign up for this job first, but you may choose a different job if the job you chose is already taken for any of the meets your child is attending.  We had a reputation last year for having well-organized parent volunteers, and we’d like to keep that up!  At each meet, we’ll ask you to check in at the volunteer table so we know all the jobs are covered.  If you are unable to work during the meets, let us know – there are a few jobs that need to be done during the week between meets.

My child came in third place. Why didn’t she earn points for the team?

The JSL bylaws state: “Points awarded for individual events will be 7-5-4-3 with no team taking more than 2 scoring places. Points awarded for relay events will be 10-5 with no team taking more than 1 scoring place.”  This means that if City swimmers are in1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and the opposing team in 4th an 5th for an individual event,
the City would earn 7+5 points for their 1st and 2nd place swimmers. The opposing team would earn 4+3 points for their 4th and 5th place swimmers.  The 3rd place swimmer would not earn points for the team. In the case of a relay event in which the City places 1st and 2nd, the 1st place team would earn the City 10 points, and the 3rd place team
would earn the opposing team  5 points.

Why is my child swimming as an ‘exhibition’ swimmer in some of her events?

Exhibition swimmers are ‘unofficial’ and cannot earn ribbons for a place or earn points for their team.  Most often, they have exceeded their maximum allowable events.  JSL bylaws state:  “Swimmers may be entered as official in only three individual events and the scheduled relay(s).” So, if a swimmer is in a relay + 4 events, one of those events is ‘unofficial.”  It could also be that the swimmer was entered into the meet after the deadline for some reason.  The times earned as an exhibition swimmer are considered official, though, and can be used for seeding in future meets.

When are swimmers called out of the water and for how long?
The JSL bylaws say: The Host Team Meet Director shall be responsible for making and implementing all decisions regarding weather issues. In the event of thunder or lightning or rain hard enough to obscure the bottom of the pool, the Meet Director shall stop the meet and clear the pool of all swimmers. In the case of thunder or lightning, the meet shall not resume until at least 15 minutes have passed since thunder or lightning were last observed. Each team shall have a plan for clearing its pool area which fits its structure and safe shelter availability. The host's team's policy will prevail if more strict than League policy.

When is the meet called for weather?
That is up to the meet director. if it looks like the weather may pass quickly enough to allow the meet to resume, we'll wait.  If it looks like the weather will last a while or we're fairly close to the end, the meet may be called, especially if we're through the half-way point.

When is a meet 'complete?'
According the JSL bylaws:  The Home Meet Director in conference with the visiting Team Meet Director(s) will decide when a meet shall be suspended due to inclement weather or other circumstances. After the completion of one-half of the scheduled events a meet will be considered complete. Tuesday or Wednesday suspended meets will be swum on Thursday of the same week except any meet at the Louisa Pool will be swum on Friday night and any meet involving Greene Hills will be swum on Monday of the following week. By mutual agreement of the Home and Visiting Meet Directors, a meet not completing the half-way event may be considered complete or another completion date may be agreed upon.

What is the mysterious "half-way event"?
It depends  on the meet format, but is about the conclusion of the breaststroke events (just before the backstroke begins).
